Drill Development
When introducing any drill or new skills to a team, coaches should utilize the 4 Phases of teaching.
Phase A - Introduce the skill (on air)
Provide clear instructions with demonstrations on the skill or drill intended
Provide some correction early but allow the players to work through their own mistakes (avoid consistent stopping and correcting)
Phase B - Introduce Defense (or offense)
Guided offense or defense to allow the skill to performed with more intensity and difficulty
Phase C - Introduce Competition
Put something on the line and make it competitive on both ends
Ensure your drill rules emphasize the skill being learned
Phase D - Add Transition
Every Drill involved offense or defense
At the end of the skill a transition to the other end should be involved as that’s a natural progression in the game
